Quick answer

Canva Craft is the first AI image model Canva has built itself, released on October 22, 2026. It learned from human-made posters, social graphics and slides, so it’s aimed at finished-looking designs with text, not just pretty photos. Anyone can try it in Dream Lab, free plan included, as long as you have AI uses left that month.

Canva has had AI image generation for a while, but it was always borrowed. The images came from other companies’ models running behind Canva’s interface. That changed this week. Canva Craft is Canva’s own model, and it takes a noticeably different approach from the generators most of us already use.

Most image models learn mainly from photos. Craft learned from the stuff people actually make in Canva: event posters, Instagram posts, presentation slides. So instead of a nice picture you then have to build a design around, the idea is that you get something that already looks like a design, with the headline in a sensible spot and words you can actually read.

Below we cover how it works, how to use it, what it costs, and whether it’s worth adding to your toolkit.

What is Canva Craft?

It’s an image generation model made by Canva’s in-house research team, announced on October 22, 2026. You’ll find it inside Dream Lab, Canva’s AI image tool, and it’s switched on for all users. Developers get access too, through an image generation API that’s still in preview.

The interesting part is how it builds an image. Craft works in two stages:

  1. Plan. It first decides the layout: where each object goes and where the text sits.
  2. Render. Only then does it draw the final image, at up to 2K resolution.

That planning step is why it copes better with headlines, labels and structured layouts than models built mostly for photos. Because it was trained on real templates, it also has a feel for spacing, hierarchy and balance, the things that separate a design from a picture.

How Canva Craft works: prompt, layout plan, render up to 2K, edit one area, add to a Canva design
Craft plans the layout before it draws, which helps with text and structure.

A few other details worth knowing: it supports around 30 aspect ratios, and you can edit one part of an image without the rest changing. Canva says reference-image input and more editing tools are on the way.

Is it actually any good?

Early results look promising. On DesignArena, a leaderboard where people vote blind between design-focused images, Craft placed fourth overall in preliminary results. Canva says that makes its lab the second-best on the board, behind only OpenAI.

A word of caution: those rankings are preliminary, and the model is only days old. Leaderboards move a lot as votes come in, so “very promising” is fairer than “best” for now.

There’s a money story here too. Every image Canva generated with someone else’s model cost it API fees, and reports say rising AI costs earlier this year pushed Canva to trim its growth targets. Owning the model cuts that bill. Whether the savings turn into bigger AI limits for users is an open question. Canva hasn’t promised anything.

How to use Canva Craft (step by step)

Step 1: Open Dream Lab

Log in to Canva and click the Dream Lab icon at the bottom of the left sidebar, or go straight to canva.com/dream-lab. Can’t see it on a team or school account? Your admin may have turned it off.

Step 2: Describe what you’re making

Cover the subject, style, colors, lighting and any text you want. Most importantly, say what the image is for, because that’s what Craft uses to plan the layout. For example:

“Instagram post for a coffee shop’s Black Friday sale. Bold headline ‘50% OFF ALL DRINKS’, warm brown and cream colors, flat illustration of a latte, clean modern layout.”

Step 3: Pick a style and size

Choose the ratio for where the image will live: 1:1 for Instagram, 9:16 for Stories, Reels and Shorts, 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails and blog headers, or portrait for posters.

Step 4: Generate, fix, then use it

Hit Generate. If one area is off, say the text is wrong or an object looks strange, edit just that part rather than starting over. Then drop the image into a Canva design or download it.

Pricing and free limits

There’s no separate price for Craft. Each image comes out of the AI allowance on your Canva plan.

  • Canva Free: enough to try it, not enough to rely on. Canva doesn’t publish a Craft-specific number, and reports of the free AI allowance range from a handful of uses to about 20 a month.
  • Canva Pro, Teams and Enterprise: a much larger monthly AI allowance (commonly reported at several hundred uses), plus premium templates and the rest of Canva’s paid tools.

Check your own number: Canva changes its AI limits often, and no two reports agree. Your exact balance is under Settings → Billing → AI usage. If you plan to make more than a few images a week, assume you’ll need Pro.

Canva Craft vs ChatGPT vs Ideogram vs Adobe Firefly

Craft is joining a crowded field. Here’s how it stacks up against the tools from our best free AI image generators roundup:

Tool Best for Weak spot
Canva Craft Ready-to-use designs: posters, social posts, slides Brand new; small free allowance
ChatGPT Following long, detailed prompts Low daily free limit
Ideogram Logos and images with text Free images are public
Adobe Firefly Commercially safe business images Less creative than rivals
Google Gemini Editing photos while keeping details Free limits vary
Which AI image generator to use: Canva Craft for designs in Canva, ChatGPT for detailed prompts, Gemini for photo edits, Ideogram for text, Firefly for commercial work
Pick the generator by the job, not by the hype.

Go with Craft if you already design in Canva and want images that drop straight into a post, poster or deck. Not having to download from one tool and upload to another saves more time than you’d think.

Stay with ChatGPT or Gemini if you mostly need realistic photos or photo edits. Ideogram is still handy when you need lots of free text-heavy images, and Adobe Firefly is the safer bet when commercial use matters most.

Who should try it?

  • Bloggers: featured images and Pinterest pins with readable titles.
  • Social media managers: posts and Stories in the right size from the first try.
  • YouTubers: thumbnail ideas with bold text. Our guide on how to use AI to make YouTube videos covers the rest of the workflow.
  • Students and teachers: slide visuals and project posters. More ideas in our best AI tools for students list.
  • Small businesses: flyers, menus and sale announcements without paying a designer.

Tips for better results

  1. Name the format. “YouTube thumbnail”, “event poster” or “LinkedIn post” gives the layout planner something to work with.
  2. Put exact text in quotes and keep it short. Three to six words render far more reliably than a full sentence.
  3. Give it colors and a style. “Navy and gold, minimalist” beats “make it look nice”.
  4. Edit instead of regenerating. Fixing one area at a time saves your AI allowance.
  5. Proofread every word. AI text has improved a lot, but a typo on a printed flyer is still your typo.

Our verdict

This is the most useful AI feature Canva has shipped so far. Training on real designs and planning the layout before drawing is a smart fit for what people actually make in Canva. The early leaderboard numbers back that up, though it’s too soon to call it the best, and the free allowance is tight.

If you already use Canva, give it a go today. It costs nothing extra and might replace a separate image tool in your workflow. Not a Canva user? Keep an eye on it, or compare your options in our best Canva alternatives guide.
