ClickUp vs monday.com: quick answer
ClickUp is cheaper and packs in more features per dollar. Its free plan has unlimited members, and the Unlimited plan costs $7 per user a month (billed yearly). monday.com costs more and sells seats in groups. Its free plan is limited to 2 seats, and Basic starts at $9 per seat a month (billed yearly), but its boards are easier to pick up.
For a 5-person team on yearly billing, that’s about $35 a month for ClickUp Unlimited and $45 a month for monday.com Basic. The gap widens on the plans most teams actually want: $60 for ClickUp Business vs $95 for monday.com Pro.
ClickUp and monday.com both aim to be the one place a team runs its work: tasks, projects, docs, dashboards and, increasingly, AI. They take different routes. ClickUp puts a very large feature set into every plan. monday.com starts with flexible, spreadsheet-like boards and adds features as you move up the tiers.
This comparison covers plans, real costs for a small team, and the pricing details that are easy to miss. It’s based on the official pricing pages, checked on 27 October 2026. Earlier this month, our AI agent test priced both tools for a 5-person team, and its main figures match the current pages. We haven’t run a team on either tool for this article, so we don’t make claims about day-to-day use.

The pricing details that catch people out
monday.com sells seats in groups
monday.com’s support documentation describes “bucket” pricing: you pay for a group of seats rather than one seat at a time. Paid plans start at 3 seats, then go up in steps (5, 10, 15 and so on). A team of four pays for five seats, and a team of six pays for ten. A team of exactly five fits neatly. If your team is between sizes, you’ll pay for empty seats.
ClickUp upgrades the whole Workspace
ClickUp’s pricing FAQ says that to upgrade, “you’ll need to upgrade your entire Workspace, which means all members in your Workspace”. You can’t put a few people on a paid plan and leave the rest on Free. Members added later are billed at a prorated price.
ClickUp’s pricing page has shown two price tables
When our AI agent checked ClickUp in October, it found two different price tables: $7 per user for “Unlimited”, and $9 for a plan called “Core” in the page’s text. On 27 October, the page we downloaded still contained both: the visible table showed Unlimited at $7, while the page’s code also held a “Core” plan at $9. This may be a pricing test, so different visitors may see different plans. Confirm the plan name and price at checkout.
Free plans: ClickUp wins clearly
ClickUp Free Forever includes unlimited tasks and unlimited members, Kanban boards, a calendar view, sprint management and collaborative docs. The main limits are 60MB of total storage and one form. ClickUp’s FAQ also says that on Free, guests get full create and edit permissions that can’t be restricted. Keep that in mind before you invite clients.
monday.com Free allows up to 2 seats, 3 boards and 3 Docs. It’s fine for a freelancer or a pair trying the product, but a team of five has to pay. monday.com also offers a 14-day free trial of its Pro plan.
Features as you go up the plans
ClickUp Unlimited ($7) adds unlimited storage, Gantt charts, custom fields, integrations, time tracking, goals and guest permissions. Business ($12) adds unlimited dashboards and timeline views, 5,000 automations a month, mind maps, Google SSO and more.
monday.com Basic ($9) adds unlimited items and unlimited free read-only viewers, plus 1,000 AI credits a month. Standard ($12) is where timeline and Gantt views, the calendar view, guest access and automations (250 actions a month) appear. Pro ($19) raises automations to 25,000 actions a month and adds private boards, time tracking and advanced columns for task dependencies.
In short, many features that need monday.com Standard or Pro are already in ClickUp Unlimited. Whether you prefer monday.com’s approach is a question of how it feels to use, and the free plans and trials are the way to find out.
AI features
Both companies now put AI at the centre of their pricing pages. monday.com lists AI credits on every paid plan (1,000 a month on Basic, 2,000 on Standard and 3,000 on Pro), covering its Sidekick assistant, AI agents and AI columns. ClickUp promotes its AI as “Brain” and sells it with separate AI pricing. We haven’t tested either one, so we can’t compare quality. If AI matters to you, check what’s included on the plan you’re considering and what extra usage costs.
Which should you choose?
- Choose ClickUp if price per feature matters, you want to start a team on a real free plan, or you need Gantt charts and docs without paying for a top tier.
- Choose monday.com if your team will work mostly in clear, visual boards, you have many people who only need to view work (viewers are free from Basic), or you want to try Pro features with the 14-day trial.
- Check seat maths for either. ClickUp charges for everyone in the Workspace. monday.com charges for a seat group that may be bigger than your team.
Our analysis: how team size changes the price
Per-seat prices hide the biggest difference between the two. ClickUp charges for each member of the Workspace. monday.com sells seats in groups: 3, 5, then steps of 5. Using the yearly-billing prices from both pricing pages (checked 28 October 2026, in USD, before tax), here’s what each team size pays per month:
| Team size | ClickUp Unlimited ($7) | ClickUp Business ($12) | monday.com seats billed | monday.com Basic ($9) | monday.com Standard ($12) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | $21 | $36 | 3 | $27 | $36 |
| 4 | $28 | $48 | 5 | $45 | $60 |
| 5 | $35 | $60 | 5 | $45 | $60 |
| 6 | $42 | $72 | 10 | $90 | $120 |
| 10 | $70 | $120 | 10 | $90 | $120 |
| 11 | $77 | $132 | 15 | $135 | $180 |
| 15 | $105 | $180 | 15 | $135 | $180 |
A few patterns stand out.
When a team fills a seat group exactly (3, 5, 10 or 15 people), monday.com Standard and ClickUp Business cost the same. At those sizes, choose on features and how each tool feels to use.
Between those sizes, monday.com costs more, because you pay for empty seats. A team of 6 is billed for 10. On Basic, that’s $90 a month, or $15 per actual person, more than the $12 list price of Standard. Teams of 6 to 9 and 11 to 14 lose the most this way.
ClickUp Unlimited was the cheapest paid plan at every size in the table. ClickUp’s own catch is different: it bills every member of the Workspace, as covered earlier. monday.com gives free read-only viewers from Basic, so a team where only some people edit work can sometimes fit into a smaller seat group.
These are list prices, not a quote. Checkout totals can differ because of tax, local currency, monthly billing (which costs more on both) and promotions, such as the AI-credit offers monday.com was showing. monday.com’s seat steps come from its support documentation, which we couldn’t open directly when checking. Confirm the seat options at checkout.
