Quick answer
In ChatGPT vs Claude, both main plans cost $20 a month, but they’re good at different things:
- Pick Claude for writing, long documents and coding. Its $20 Pro plan includes Claude Opus 5.5, which currently scores higher than any GPT-6 model on Artificial Analysis’s independent index (58 vs 55 for GPT-6.1 Sol).
- Pick ChatGPT if you want one app that does everything: image creation, voice, interactive answers (Intelligent UI) and a cheaper $8 Go plan.

ChatGPT vs Claude: the quick verdict
If you write for a living, work with long documents, or code, start with Claude. If you want images, voice conversations, quick interactive tools and the widest set of features in one app, start with ChatGPT. If money is tight, ChatGPT has something Claude doesn’t: an $8 Go plan between free and $20.
Both have free plans, so the cheapest way to decide is to use both for a week. The rest of this page tells you what to look for.
Which models do you actually get?
This matters more than any headline. “GPT-6” and “Claude 5.5” are families, and your plan decides which member you talk to.
| Plan | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Free | GPT-5.6 Luna (small, fast) | Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 |
| $8 | Go: GPT-5.6 Luna, more use | No equivalent |
| $20 | Plus: GPT-6 Sol, limited Astra in Codex/Work | Pro: Opus 5.5, Sonnet, Haiku; Fable via usage credits |
| From $100 | Pro: GPT-6 Astra in chat | Max: Opus plus Fable 5.1 within weekly limits |

The big difference is at $20. Claude Pro gives you Opus 5.5, Anthropic’s main model. ChatGPT Plus gives you GPT-6 Sol, OpenAI’s middle model, with only limited access to its top model, Astra. If you’re curious what each ChatGPT tier includes, see ChatGPT Free vs Go vs Plus.
Which is smarter? The independent scores
Artificial Analysis runs the same set of 10 tests on every model, which makes it one of the fairer ways to compare. At maximum reasoning effort, as of October 30:

Claude Opus 5.5 scores 58, second out of all models Artificial Analysis lists. GPT-6.1 Sol scores 55, and GPT-6 Astra 53. Claude Fable 5.1 scores 49, though Anthropic positions it for long, demanding agent work rather than this kind of test.
Two caveats. These scores use maximum effort, and the apps don’t always run that hard. And GPT-6.1 Sol is an option in ChatGPT Work and Codex, not regular chat, where Plus uses GPT-6 Sol. Still, the direction is clear: at $20, you don’t give anything up on raw capability by choosing Claude.
ChatGPT vs Claude for writing
No benchmark measures good writing well, so be wary of anyone who gives you a score. What’s consistent across reviews is that Claude’s drafts tend to sound more natural and need less editing, and it handles long documents comfortably. ChatGPT writes well too, and it’s faster to get a short, punchy answer.
Writing is the one category where your own test matters most. Give both the same brief, with the same audience, facts and length, and see which one you’d actually send. Our best AI writing tools guide covers dedicated writing apps as well.
ChatGPT vs Claude for coding
Both $20 plans include a serious coding tool: Codex for ChatGPT and Claude Code for Claude. Anthropic describes Opus 5.5 as built “for long-running agentic coding and knowledge work” (Anthropic), and Claude Code is the tool many developers reach for first.
ChatGPT Plus has one advantage: limited access to GPT-6 Astra inside Codex, on 5-hour and weekly limits. For a deeper comparison of the coding tools themselves, read Claude Code vs Cursor vs GitHub Copilot.
Images, voice and everything else
This is where ChatGPT clearly wins. It creates images, which Claude doesn’t, and it’s strong at putting readable text into them. Since October 7, ChatGPT can also answer with charts, calculators and small interactive tools through Intelligent UI (9to5Mac). If those get in your way, here’s how to turn off Intelligent UI.
Claude has caught up on some basics. Voice mode is now in beta on every plan, including free, on mobile, desktop and the web (Claude Help Center). Memory and web search are on the free plan too. Claude’s own extras are Artifacts, which build documents and small apps alongside the chat, and Projects for keeping files and instructions together.
Both are also moving into agents that work for you in the background. ChatGPT has ChatGPT Work and a cloud browser on paid plans. Claude has Claude Duet, currently a waitlist for US Pro and Max users.
Price: what $20 gets you
Both main plans cost $20 a month. Claude Pro drops to $17 a month if you pay yearly (Claude pricing). ChatGPT is the only one with a cheaper paid tier, Go at $8, which uses the same small model as the free plan with more room. Both top tiers start at $100.
Developers paying per token will notice how closely the two price lists now mirror each other (OpenAI, Anthropic):
| Tier | OpenAI (input / output per 1M tokens) | Anthropic (input / output per 1M tokens) |
|---|---|---|
| Top | GPT-6 Astra: $10 / $50 | Claude Fable 5.1: $10 / $50 |
| Main | GPT-6.1 Sol: $2 / $10 | Claude Opus 5.5: $4 / $20 |
| Mid | GPT-6.1 Terra: $1 / $5 | Claude Sonnet 5.5: $2 / $10 |
| Small | GPT-6 Luna: $0.10 / $0.50 | Claude Haiku 5.5: $0.10 / $0.50 |
The small models cost the same on paper.
Which should you choose?

Choose Claude if most of your AI use is writing, editing, analysing long documents or coding. At $20, its main model is the stronger one on independent tests.
Choose ChatGPT if you want images, voice, interactive answers and the most features in one place, or if $20 is more than you want to spend and $8 Go is enough.

How to test ChatGPT vs Claude yourself in 15 minutes
Use the free plans, a fresh chat in each, and these five prompts from your own work:
- Writing: the same email or blog intro brief, with audience and facts.
- Long document: upload the same PDF and ask for the three most important points with page numbers.
- Reasoning: a planning problem you already know the answer to.
- Code or formulas: a small function or spreadsheet formula, then actually run it.
- Research: a current question that needs sources. Click every link.
Paste both answers side by side as “A” and “B” before you decide, so the brand doesn’t sway you.
Our verdict
For writing, documents and code, Claude is our pick in late 2026. Its $20 plan includes the model that currently scores highest on independent tests, and that shows most on long, careful work. ChatGPT remains the better all-rounder, with images, voice, interactive answers and a cheaper paid tier. The models are close enough that how you work should decide, not the logo.
