Quick answer

ChatGPT Intelligent UI is the October 2026 feature that lets ChatGPT answer with charts, maps, calculators and small interactive tools instead of plain text. You can’t switch it off completely, but you can cut it back: on chatgpt.com go to Settings → Layout and visuals, turn it off, and start a new chat. For a single answer, just ask for “plain text only.”

If ChatGPT recently answered your simple question with a chart, a slider or a little calculator you didn’t ask for, you’ve met Intelligent UI. Some people love it. Plenty of others just want the text back.

This guide explains what changed, when it shows up, and the few ways you can get plain answers again.

What is ChatGPT Intelligent UI?

Intelligent UI arrived with GPT-6 on October 7, 2026. Instead of always replying in paragraphs, ChatGPT now decides on its own whether an answer works better as something visual or interactive (9to5Mac).

OpenAI describes responses that can include “graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts, and interactive experiences.” You don’t need a special prompt to trigger it. In practice that means things like a recipe laid out as a cooking timeline, a road trip plotted on a map, a savings calculator where you drag a slider and the result updates, or a bill splitter for a group dinner.

It also changed how answers arrive. GPT-6 can start showing an answer while it’s still reasoning, filling in details as it goes, rather than making you wait for the whole thing.

Ways to control ChatGPT Intelligent UI: turn off Layout and visuals on the web, ask for plain text, use the Pro thinking level, use the web app instead of the old desktop app
Your options, from strongest to quickest.

Why would you want to turn it off?

The visuals are genuinely handy for budgets, comparisons and anything with numbers. But they get in the way when you want to copy text into an email or document, read on a small screen, or use a screen reader. Interactive pieces don’t always copy cleanly. And if you asked a quick question, a widget can feel like a lot of ceremony for a one-line answer.

There’s no right answer here. If you write for a living, you’ll probably want it reduced. If you mostly ask “how much will this cost me,” you may prefer to leave it on.

How to turn off ChatGPT Intelligent UI

OpenAI documents one setting for this, on the web version of ChatGPT (as quoted from OpenAI’s help article):

Step 1: Open ChatGPT in a browser

Go to chatgpt.com and sign in. The setting isn’t documented in the phone apps yet.

Step 2: Open Settings

Click your profile picture or name in the corner, then Settings.

Step 3: Turn off “Layout and visuals”

Find the Layout and visuals option and switch it off. One guide places it under Personalization, so look there if it isn’t on the first screen.

Step 4: Start a new chat

Existing conversations keep their old look. Open a new chat and ask your question again to see the change.

It reduces, it doesn’t remove. OpenAI’s own wording is that “some visual elements may still appear.” There’s no full text-only mode at the moment.

Other ways to get plain text answers

Ask for it in the prompt

The quickest fix for one conversation. Add something like “Answer in plain text only, no charts or interactive elements” to your message. It works on any device, including the mobile apps.

Use the Pro thinking level (Pro plans)

On Pro plans, the Pro thinking level runs on GPT-6 Astra, which doesn’t support Intelligent UI. That’s an expensive way to avoid widgets, so it only makes sense if you’re already paying for Pro.

Use custom instructions

If you always want text, add a line to your custom instructions such as “Prefer plain text answers unless I ask for a chart or tool.” This isn’t an official off switch, and ChatGPT may still decide a visual is better, but it nudges every new chat in your direction.

Why you might not see Intelligent UI at all

Some people are looking for the feature, not trying to escape it. If it never shows up for you, there are three usual reasons:

First, you’re on the older desktop app. OpenAI says the older ChatGPT apps for macOS and Windows don’t support these capabilities and recommends the web version instead. Second, your mobile app is out of date, so update it. Third, you’ve already turned off Layout and visuals, or your custom instructions ask for text.

Free and Go accounts got GPT-6 from October 8, a day after paid plans. Which model each plan gets is a separate topic. Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini guide has the plan-by-plan table.

Does Intelligent UI use up your limits?

No separate quota has been announced. Intelligent UI answers count against your plan’s normal usage like any other message. If you’re on a free plan and hitting limits, the widgets aren’t the reason.

Is it worth keeping on?

For most people, a middle path works best. Leave it on, and ask for plain text when you need to copy something. The interactive calculators are the most useful part. Ask “how much will I save if I put $200 a month away for 5 years” and you get a slider you can play with, which beats re-asking with different numbers.

If you compare assistants often, it’s also one of the clearer differences between ChatGPT and its rivals right now. Claude has Artifacts and Gemini has Canvas, but there you usually ask for the tool. ChatGPT now decides by itself. If you’re choosing between paid plans, our Google AI Pro vs ChatGPT Plus comparison covers what else you get for the money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you completely turn off ChatGPT Intelligent UI?

Not completely. On chatgpt.com you can turn off Settings → Layout and visuals to reduce it, but OpenAI says some visual elements may still appear. For a single answer, ask for plain text only.

Where is the Layout and visuals setting?

In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings and look for Layout and visuals. Some guides place it under Personalization. It isn’t documented in the mobile apps yet.

Why is ChatGPT showing charts and buttons in my answers?

That’s Intelligent UI, launched with GPT-6 on October 7, 2026. ChatGPT decides when a chart, map, calculator or small tool explains an answer better than text.

Why don’t I see Intelligent UI?

You may be using the older ChatGPT desktop app, which doesn’t support it, or an outdated mobile app. Your Layout and visuals setting or custom instructions may also be asking for text.

Does Intelligent UI cost extra?

No. It’s included on all plans and uses your normal usage limits.
